A New Era for the Cavaliers

IMG_5598.JPG
To begin this year's first blog, I must first paint the total picture (one of which deserves painting). For those that were in attendance, you know what I mean and for those that weren’t, I hope you were finding a cure to cancer! One could sense a new found energy that was hovering in the gym. I could smell it. The Corunna gymnasium started the night off on the right note with Jason Beldyga’s  hot playlist, playing many tracks that were instant crowd favorites. One could tell he certainly spent all third block planning and preparing for his gig. I can most certainly appreciate that. For example, when it was time to announce the 50/50 ticket raffle, he played 50 Cent. Or when he announced our coach's name "John Rocky Buscemi", he played the theme song to Rocky. Or even at the beginning of the game the music consisted of “Black and Yellow” by Wiz Khalifa.Get it? Our school colors? Did many people in the stands grasp the correlation? No, but those that did appreciated the fact that he went the extra mile.

In regards to the student section, it was more packed than we've seen in a few years. They were relentless and I absolutely loved it. I actually heard a few students yelling “Hey #30, pop that zit on your forehead!” Was this too far? Of course! But anything goes in the ides of the Corunna gymnasium and I couldn’t be happier for it. So for the Corunna student that yelled this, we thank you. With this excited season ahead of us, we hope that your most creative chants are in the near future.

In addition to the pre-game festivities, the first varsity game for the Cavaliers was one of those “edge of your seat” kind of games. Not only did they come out in new trendsetting Moneyball uniforms(which looked sharp, I must add), but they came out with a whole new philosophy on how to play this wonderful game of basketball. The new identity for the Cavaliers instantly had an impact on their gameplay. The Cavaliers’ up-tempo style of play shed some light on one of the Cavs’ senior leaders, Ethan Quinn. Although he didn't fill up the stat sheet with “popular” stats, he filled the “glue” stats to the brim. Quinn recorded double digit steals and was looking like a young Jabrill Peppers the way he was shrinking the court. He was “Mr.Everything” on defense.

From the very first possession, head coach John “Rocky” Buscemi was fired up and one could even say a little tense, but that’s understandable. I could tell that he was waiting for this moment since the moment he landed the top job. In a recent interview with the Cavaliers’ leader, the most important vibe I received from him is that he wants to put Corunna basketball back on the map. One could say he is headed in the right direction. When team manager, Brandon Crouse, was asked what his outlook for this year was he commented, “This team is much improved from last year. We’re all excited for a fresh new start and I think Coach Buscemi brings that to the table for us. Nobody has seen anything yet!"

Now let’s talk about the real reason I’m writing this. The ball game. One couldn’t help but notice the ankle socks, a baggy jersey, and a bewildered look on his face. Newbie Mitchel Skym certainly did not pass the eye test, but the stat sheet told a different tale. Skym was downright electric in the first half, banging home 3 straight threes and later topping it off with one more in the second half. Coming off the bench, he provided a much needed spark and double digit lead that the Cavs would hold onto going into the fourth. Skym, only a sophomore, made a world of difference in a short amount of time.

With clock ticking away in the fourth quarter, Laingsburg made an end of game push that almost left the Cavs defeated. However, with Corunna’s new and improved defense, it was enough to stop to Wolfpack one final time to end the game with a 41-40 victory.

Basketball season is upon us and I cannot wait to continue this Corunna journey together.Your Cavaliers are home once again on Friday against the Bucs of Flint Beecher.Come out and support your boys!

What a time to be a Cavalier!
