Food For Thought & GACtion

A joyous pep band, the sweet aroma of popcorn nectar, and high school basketball. What’s better? Absolutely nothing. After a few lackluster crowds, Corunna High School’s gymnasium is the hot spot to be on a Friday night. In this article I’m not going to “paint the picture” because some people need to go and see picasso’s artwork for themselves. The more the merrier!

It’s hard to grasp the magnitude of how special a place Corunna/Corunna High School truly is. Corunna will always be a special place to me because there's so much pride and passion. I’ve never been ashamed to say where I’m from; the opposite, in fact. When I think about Corunna, the word “grit” has a strong resonation. I think of a town that was built on the back’s of agriculture and sheer sweat and hand callouses. Nothing ever came easy to a kid growing up in Corunna and I think that’s where our communal “togetherness” can be attributed to. The phrase “bonded by common struggle” could fit Corunna to a tee.Our sports teams are the epitome of our community. Tough and a downright brotherhood. Our players grow up in the same neighborhoods while other teams have players they just met this year. Former players and alumni can relate first-hand because they know the grind that it took to reach where these guys are. Name one school that has more support from sports alumni than Corunna has. Go ahead, I’ll wait…...

On a side note, where exactly was our announcer Mr. Jason Beldyga? In fact, I do know where he was. Mr. Beldyga was receiving an award for being a finalist for the division 2 Track & Field coach of the year. I would like to give major props to Mr. Samuel “Sweet Hair-Doo” Shuster as he took the reigns of our absent play-by-play and did a fantastic job. If you see “Sweet Hair-Doo” Shuster in the hallways, give him a high five. The world needs more Sam Shusters for sure!

A few things I noticed right off the bat…...
1.) Logan Lepage was out for the Cavaliers. Lepage is one of the two “sophomore standouts” on the squad and is a relentless rebounding machine.
2.) Can somebody please have Goodrich contact me on what “OKG” means? It was embroidered across their warm-up and  I’m sure it’s something meaningful to them, but I’m still curious, nonetheless.

As the game began, it started the same way as the last meeting between these two squads. At the end of the first, it was a tightly contested game with Corunna leading 11-9. Into the second quarter, it was all about the Cavaliers as “High Flying” Jaron VanFleteren made an impact as he sliced and diced his way to the rack, making plays that Corunna highly sought. However, the biggest momentum swinger in my opinion was after JV hit a contested floater. Cooper “Big Smooth” “Bro-Bro” Clapp planted his feet and took a charge. The Cavalier’s bench erupted and really switched the control of the game. This moment didn’t last too long as the Martians ran away with it 58-51. Sorry for the plot twist readers.

Your Cavaliers only have ONE home game left this year. February 6th @ 7PM
Send off your Corunna seniors with one more electric home crowd!

What a time it is to be a Cavalier!
